Roadmap to Healing

Are you more tired during the day than you used to be, get colds and flues too frequently and/or have problems getting a good night’s rest? Do you have gut challenges – i.e. gas, bloating, reflux, food allergies, constipation and/or diarrhea?

Although a diet imbalance may be a piece of the it, other challenges may be running in the background.

When I first became a dietitian exploring food choices with clients and how to intentionally choose healthier options was enough to help a client go towards their desired health goals.

Unfortunately, times have changed and now food is just one piece of the puzzle. Our environment and exposure to toxins, heavy metals, bacteria, and mold are all components of how healthy we are. Invisible things running in the background are hard to realize, and yet your body knows it and is constantly trying to help you overcome these challenges.

Toxins may be running in the background. You may be drinking them, breathing them, using them on your skin or being exposed via cleaning products, off gassing of furniture, paint, and other chemicals in your home. Heavy metals in amalgam fillings expose us to a continual stream of mercury leaving us vulnerable to changes in brain health.

Endocrine disruptors present in many products including plastics, cleaning and personal care products, linings of metal food cans, and toys are just a few things have many negative health consequences. Some of these challenges are metabolic disorders (diabetes), cancer, and infertility.

Toxins have the capability of blocking receptor sites in your cells where nutrients get in to make enzymes, neurotransmitters and healthy cells.

Food manufacturers use pesticides/herbicides, food additives and preservatives to lower costs, increase food production and preservation. Things we eat or drink every day contain pesticides that set the stage for inflammation in the gut, making it hard for the microbiome to be healthy.

Much of the time those with gastrointestinal issues have no gut symptoms but rather have depressions, anxiety, fatigue, infertility, hormone issues – all problems that are manifestations of gut challenges since your gut is responsible for 70-90% of your immunity are neurotransmitters.

Our organs of elimination – liver, gut, skin, kidneys can be overwhelmed and contrary to what you may read doing a 5-day detox may not touch what is going on.

Un layering these causes of ill health is not easy – it’s more of a marathon rather than a sprint. However, your body can heal. Sometimes testing is necessary to unmask what the problems are to determine how to proceed with healing the gut, your liver and organs of elimination to create the roadmap towards health and healing. The mantra now is “test, don’t guess.”

Occasionally a diet change is all that is needed but more often than not it can be more to determine drivers of ill health and how to proceed for the future. If that is something you are interested in pursuing to determine how to proceed with your health, please contact me for an appointment.
