Want to Save Time? Consider the Recency Effect

Do you subscribe to the “recency effect?”  It’s a helpful concept to remember as you are speaking with a client. Although it’s simple it’s frequently under used. A client will talk about the last thing you said so what do you want to hear more of the problem or the solution?

For example, in your desire to be empathetic you might state “this is really hard for you.”   And what is the next thing you hear?  “Yes, I’m so frustrated with the situation.”

So how do you be BOTH empathetic and end on change?  Here’s an example:

Although this is really hard for you, you came today because you are trying to problem solve and figure out a solution.”

Ending on change will result in more “change talk” versus “sustain talk” or status quo.

A fellow MI trainer Mallori DeSalle frequently states “do you want to end up in pain town or change town?”

As the helping professional you get to choose.  Look for the hope underneath the words of struggle.  Subscribing to the “recency effect” will save you time and leave your client thinking about possibilities for change.
