What about that Paleo Diet?
I’ve been asked about this diet at least 10 times in the last month so as usual that means it’s high on people’s radar, which means blog time. How does this diet rate?
What is the Paleo diet? It is a diet based on what cavemen presumably ate more than 10,000 years ago – meat, fish, eggs, nuts, fruits and veggies – whatever could be hunted, fished or gathered.
What’s good about the Paleolithic diet?
The Paleo diet is a whole foods diet – no packaged, processed foods of any kind – no chemicals, preservatives, or anything artificial; no processed or starchy carbs and nothing sweet except fruit – no sugar, high fructose corn syrup, agave, etc.
What’s the catch?
This diet contains no healthy carbs or dairy products. No brown rice or quinoa beans/legumes, sweet potatoes or yogurt and cheese.
And WHY avoid those foods now? Healthy carbs like legumes, sweet potatoes have nutrients and fiber. Yogurt and cheese provide calcium, healthy bacteria for the gut and vegetarian sources of protein.
Both these food groups contribute to a balanced whole foods diet. I personally do not subscribe to any one eating plan or rule. Why not take the good parts of this way of eating and leave the rest?
A whole foods non-processed way of eating is healthy and recommended so I propose the Paleo Plus Diet – including dairy and healthy carbs.? Your body will thank you and you won’t feel like you’re back in cavemen times.
