Did you Know?

Here are some alarming health statistics in the US you may or may not be aware of:

  • Weight is the a biggest health threat in the US, more than smoking, drinking and poverty in the United States
  • 70% of people in the US are overweight.  Obesity has increased by at least 60% in the last two decades
  • 95% of type 2 or adult onset diabetes is caused by obesity
  • 80% of cancers are diet related or caused by obesity
  • Fake sweeteners are expanding our waist-lines instead of slimming us down
  • The fastest growing groups of adult onset or type 2 diabetes are children and adolescents
  • This will be the first generation of children predicted to not outlive their parents due to the high-fat, high-sugar, refined-flour diet and our rather sedentary lifestyle
  • The average child gets over 50% of their calories from fat and sugar
  • 50% of fatigue and depression are caused by poor diets
  • 70% of the population do not receive the minimum daily requirements for key nutrients for health
  • The average child sees over 40,000 TV commercials with over 80% of food ads promoting junk foods

How do we respond to this health crisis?  The problem is multi layered but eating responsibly and holding food manufacturers responsible by refusing to buy their over processed food is a loud way to place your vote.  In A Recipe for Life by the Doctor’s Dietitian I give a clear, definitive road map to change the tide on these unfortunate statistics, hoping to lead our population towards health and longevity.

Is There A Male Menopause?

Research on menopause focuses mostly on females and the changes they incur as they age.  However, did you know that men also experience physical changes?  The most frequent disorder of sex hormones in men is called hypogonadism, which is usually associated with a testosterone level of less than 300 ng/dl.

Hypogonadism is linked with an increased accumulation of visceral fat, insulin resistance and a risk of adult onset diabetes.  Overweight or obese men tend to have lower testosterone levels since increases in belly fat converts testosterone to higher levels of estrogen.  Lower testosterone levels can dramatically lower energy levels and increase depression in men.

Men with adult onset diabetes have a 70 percent higher risk of hypogonadism.  A balanced diet with healthy protein sources (lean meat, poultry, wild fish, organic eggs and low fat dairy, nuts/seeds) combined with natural sources of carbohydrate such as fruits and vegetables and healthy fats (avocado, olive oil) can dramatically reduce insulin resistance which can lead to weight and belly fat loss.

Adding a moderate exercise program to the above diet can synergistically lower visceral fat and restore balance in the body.  When weight loss occurs, estrogen coverts to testosterone which begins the process of restoring energy levels leading to vitality and sense of well being.

What can you do if you suspect you have male menopause?  Have your physician measure your testosterone levels and if low, supplemental testosterone may need to be prescribed.

In addition a diet and exercise adjustment can significantly change your life and restore energy and well-being.  It’s important to realize that men and women share the journey of change and that males can experience changes in the body that need attention to keep harmony within the sexes.

Omega 3's for Health?

Why all the hype about Omega-3 fatty acids, and what exactly are they good for? The history of fats is a long complex one we will save for another blog. The important thing to know for now is that Omega-3 fatty acids are a type of polyunsaturated fat or one that is liquid at room temperature. Another type of polyunsaturated fat is known as Omega-6 fatty acids and it is vital to know the difference.

Omega-3 fatty acids are critical to keeping the cells of your body healthy and flexible so good nutrients can get in and waste can get out. They have what is known as an “anti-inflammatory effect” in the body versus the “pro-inflammatory” effect that omega-6 fatty acids have. Think of what happens when you sprain your ankle and it swells – this can happen internally to the body when your diet is out of whack and you are not getting the right types of fats.

The 3 types of omega-3 fatty acids have long chemical names but let’s stick with the abbreviations: ALA, DHA, and EPA. ALA is found in high concentrations in ground flax seeds and DHA and EPA are found in fish and fish oil It is thought that 85% of Americans are deficient in Omega-3 fatty acids which has lead to many types of medical problems including heart disease, arthritis, diabetes, depression, Alzheimer’s, and cancer to name a few.

Olive oil is the main one that contains large amounts of omega-3 fatty acids. Most other oils are high in omega-6: vegetable, corn, sunflower, safflower, soybean. Canola oil is a genetically modified product (see blog 4/9/09) and therefore not recommended.

Multiple research studies in the past year have proven:

Daily intake of DHA and EPA (fish oil) can lower triglyceride levels by 25-30% which can subsequently lower risk of heart disease and diabetes

EPA taken daily by patients with colorectal cancer had suppression of cancer cell growth

After supplementing for 4 weeks with EPA/DHA, subjects displayed significantly lower levels of depression compared to controls

Supplementing with DHA and DPA delayed the onset of Alzheimer’s disease by reducing inflammation in the brain

Patients with Rheumatoid Arthritis taking omega-3 fatty acids had significant reduction of their pain intensity, morning stiffness and joint pain and were able to lower their pain medications

Taking EPA/DHA during the 3rd trimester of pregnancy contributes significantly to both neurological and visual development of the baby besides improved mood of the Mother

The ALA in ground flax seed contains a lignan, a type of phytoestrogen that is thought to have a role in prevention of breast cancer. Since the lignan can bind to estrogen receptors, estrogen related cancers are minimized

The take home message is you can’t afford NOT to take omega-3 fatty acids for health and prevention of disease. To get your omega-3’s I recommend a daily intake of:

1. 1 tablespoon per day of ground flax seed for ALA
2. At least 1000 mg. each of DHA and EPA from fish oil or fatty fish
3. Use olive oil as your main oil and minimize other oils
