The Vast World of Protein Powders

Since this seems to be the week of protein supplements let’s talk about protein powders.

Yeah or Nay?  Since the world of protein powders has become complex and hard to navigate, a blog seemed apropos.

Most protein powders are full of vitamins, additives, and sweeteners (both real and fake) which may not be in your health interests.

The same principles apply to protein powders as bars as stated in the previous blog – how many ingredients are there, what are the ingredients and what does it the taste like?

A few years ago I was on the search for protein powders to recommend for quick smoothies in the morning that fit these criteria and came up rather short on choices.  Here are three I recommend:

1. Whey to Go Vanilla protein powder by Solgar – with very few ingredients, no sweeteners or vitamins added this is a good choice.  It has 20 grams of protein per scoop and only 2 grams of carbohydrate from the whey.  There are other flavors from this company but I don’t recommend them due to the added sweeteners.

2.  Whey Factors Unflavored protein powder– this company has done their homework.  Great quality whey protein, non-GMO with no added sweeteners or additives.  At 16 grams of protein and less than a gram of carbohydrate per scoop a great option to use without even knowing it’s there.

3.  Now Egg White protein Powder – with absolutely nothing but egg whites this is a great option as well.  It contains 16 grams of protein and less than a gram of carbohydrate per scoop.  This one has a bit of an egg flavor.

How do you make a great tasting protein smoothie in the morning?

Here’s an easy recipe that can be easily altered to your tastes:

 Morning Smoothie Boost

½ cup of organic 1% milk or unsweetened vanilla almond milk

½ cup of organic plain yogurt of choice

½ banana and/or 1 cup of berries (fresh or frozen)

1 tbsp. of ground flax seed

1 scoop of your choice of protein powder

1 tbsp. of natural peanut or other nut butter (optional)

Crushed ice

Blend and enjoy!

Drinking a smoothie in the morning gives you a quick and easy high protein option if you are short on time.  The above protein powders can usually be purchased at Whole Foods, Co-op, and Sprouts or online at Amazon.
